Dental Implants

Dental implants are prosthetic tooth replacements that are used to counter tooth loss. A dental implant is generally composed of a titanium screw that is anchored in the jaw, which will then support the artificial tooth or teeth, much like the root of a natural tooth.

Of all the numerous restorative treatments for missing teeth, none are quite so functionally effective and durable as implants. Traditional crowns and bridges rely on the adjacent teeth for support, and the strain placed on these teeth can possibly compromise their health. An implant can eliminate the risk to surrounding teeth because it supports itself. Implants can also be used to secure dentures. While this greatly increases the stability of dentures, it is also highly effective in reducing bone loss from the jaw.

In addition to looking, feeling, and functioning like real teeth, dental implants will not decay. However, while the implant itself may not form cavities, poor oral hygiene can still lead to severe gum disease and other complications. As always, proper hygiene and regular dental cleanings are strongly encouraged.

Success Rates of Dental Implants

Implants are some of the most successful dental procedures. While there is no absolute guarantee that the implant procedure will be successful, studies have shown a five-year success rate of 90% for upper jaw implants and 95% for lower jaw implants.
