Veneers

Dental veneers are a great way to get that gorgeous smile you may be looking for. Dental veneers are shells of porcelain that are bonded to the teeth, and they may be able to correct many causes of unattractive teeth. Teeth that are worn down, that are chipped or cracked, have worn enamel, or that have abnormal spaces can all be corrected with porcelain veneers. Even better, the translucent ceramics used in today's veneers will give your beautiful new smile a much more natural look than what's been available in the past.

While veneers may be esthetically pleasing, they are also very functional; dental veneers can protect the surface of a damaged tooth. Because veneers require much less invasive tooth preparation, in some cases veneers may be a better option than a dental crown. Once bonded to the teeth, porcelain veneers are actually quite strong and durable, just like natural teeth, and if maintained properly they can last for up to twenty years.

The Procedure

The dental veneer procedure can often be completed in just two office visits. In the first visit the teeth will be minimally reshaped; this will allow for the thickness of the porcelain veneer and help provide the best fit. Next, an impression of your teeth will be taken. This impression will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain veneers will be professionally fabricated. During the second visit the completed veneers will be placed.

While the veneers are being fabricated, temporary veneers may or may not be placed; if you are getting a veneer placed on only one or a few teeth, and if enough enamel remains after the reshaping process, then temporary veneers may not be necessary. However if too much enamel is removed, temporary veneers will help protect the teeth. An added bonus of temporaries is the chance to become accustomed to the look and feel of the veneers.
